Startling mental ill health rates in LGBTQI community
What happened
Researchers at Monash University analyzed Australian Bureau of Statistics mental health data and found more than half of cisgender non-heterosexual Australians and more than a third of transgender Australians have been diagnosed with a mental disorder. LGBTQI Australians face up to 3.5 times the risk of high psychological distress compared with the rest of the population: 41.3 percent reported high or very high distress, versus 15.5 percent among cisgender heterosexual Australians. Anxiety was the most commonly reported condition. Senior researcher Long Le called the findings startling and pointed to stigma, discrimination, and barriers to affirming healthcare.

What is still uncertain
The figures come from survey data, which captures reported diagnoses and symptoms rather than clinical assessment of every respondent. The analysis documents disparities; it does not establish their causes.
