Nurses angry, distressed amid chemical exposure fears
What happened
The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation says staff at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital are angry and distressed after learning a type of sterile glove they used may not have protected them from toxic chemicals, including chemotherapy agents. The hospital withdrew the glove after the Victorian workplace safety regulator raised the issue in late August. The gloves were not rated for chemotherapy but were used for patients with latex allergies. Independent investigators will determine whether staff were exposed.

What is still uncertain
Whether any staff were actually exposed, and any health effects, are not yet known. The union alleges some staff knew of the issue up to a decade ago; the hospital has not publicly addressed that claim.
